Civil Partnership Act 2004

Civil Partnership Act 2004

From December 2005, people in a same-sex relationship are able to register that relationship as a ‘civil partnership’ under the Civil Partnership Act 2004. Civil partnership confers on the couple many of the same legal and financial rights and responsibilities as married couples. For the purposes of this website, unless otherwise stated:

  • references to ‘husband’, ‘wife’ or ‘spouse’ apply equally to civil partners
  • references to ‘marriage’ apply equally to civil partnership
  • references to ‘widow’, ‘widower’ apply equally to a surviving civil partner; and
  • references to a ‘widow’s pension’ or a ‘widower’s pension’ apply equally to a surviving civil partner’s pension except that for members of classic and classic plus, surviving civil partners’ pensions are based on service from 6 April 1988 only.
