A major data collection exercise to create a fully searchable information database on all public Internet access points throughout Northern Ireland. Information collected on these access points includes location, opening times, contact details, disability access and the availability of ICT training. We are liaising with NICVA, Rural Community Network and the local Councils to identify which community centres have Internet access points.
The database is linked to a low cost telephone number, both locally by using EGSA’s “Connect to Learn” line, and nationally by using the UK Online Centres helpline - this will enable the public to locate their nearest Internet access point by simply making a telephone call. This project is also the first government backed initiative in Northern Ireland to feature “Text 4” – this enables citizens to locate their nearest public Internet access points by simply sending a text message containing the word “Internet” to 60900. The database has also been linked to a Geographical Information Systems (GIS) package, thus enabling the public to see a visual map representing the precise location of their nearest Internet access point.
