Lessons learned

Description

In the context of Programme and Project Management (PPM), Lessons Learned (LL) should be viewed as useful information from previous Programmes or Projects that can be shared with others. It is usually presented in the form of recommendations on the way forward or highlighting were potential improvements or modifications could have been made or should be made in the future. In the wider NICS context Lessons Learned also describes a comprehensive process of collecting and circulating lessons from Programmes and Projects which is a key long term goal of the Centre of Expertise (CoE) for Programme and Project Management.

Programmes or Projects that are run using methods such as Managing Successful Programmes (MSP) or PRojects In Controlled Environments (PRINCE2) are required to produce formal Lessons Learned as part of a structured approach. The failure to learn lessons from previous experience is a constant feature of Audit and Public Accounts Committee (PAC) reports and is a characteristic of many unsuccessful public sector Programmes and Projects.
