Background

On these pages you can find out about the promotion of energy efficiency in the Public Sector, targets for the Government estate in Northern Ireland, information about the Central Energy Efficiency Fund and monitoring energy use and performance.

Aim of the Public Sector Energy Campaign

To promote the efficient use of energy by Northern Ireland Public Bodies, in line with Government targets for energy efficiency and the reduction of emissions to the atmosphere.

Targets for the Government estate in Northern Ireland

The energy efficiency of the public sector estate in Northern Ireland is measured against the following targets:

  • To increase the energy efficiency of the buildings on their estates measured in terms of kiloWatt-hours (kWh) of fuel and electricity used per square metre of building floor area by 15% by 2010/11, relative to a base year of 1999/2000;
  • To reduce absolute carbon, from fuel and electricity used in buildings on their estates by 12.5% by 2010/11, relative to a base year of 1999/2000; and
  • To reduce electricity consumption across the estate by 1% annually from 2007 to 2012 against the base year of 2006/07
