Rating of empty homes from October 2011

From 1st October 2011 the same level of rates will be due on all domestic properties whether occupied or empty. There are some exclusions that may apply, but customers will not be able to apply for an exclusion until after 1 October 2011.

The Rating of Empty Homes fact sheet contains a list of exclusions, but this list is not exhaustive and may be subject to change. The full list of exclusions and an application form will be available from 1 October 2011 on the NI Direct website or by contacting LPS.

What do I need to do?

You need to advise LPS of your contact details and any change in circumstances when either:

  • you are the owner of an empty property
  • you own, occupy or are the landlord/letting agent of a property that was previously empty and is now occupied

You can advise LPS by completing and returning the Confirmation of Property Status form below. This is a writeable document, which means that you can complete on screen, print, sign and send to LPS.

How are Rental Properties affected?

All empty properties will be charged rates regardless of whether or not they are in the rental sector. There are alternative payment provisions available to landlords depending on the type of rate account that applies to their property. A separate fact sheet explaining the different types of accounts is currently being drawn up and will be made available on this website by 28 February 2011.

If you require further information before 28 February 2011 you can contact the LPS Central Landlords Team:
